Report of Visit 04-05-2020

2020-05-07

In the past week, we made many visits to check the Tulip fields in north area。 There is a big difference between growing fields in the sandy soil and clay soil。

We made two reports, showing the difference in growing conditions.

Sandy soil:  Fields look good. Even after heavy rain and poor weather conditions during plating, the crop looks good.

Clay soil:  Part of the fields does not look good. Water damage, poor roots, poor growth are result of heavy rain and poor weather conditions.

Date:

May 1st-2020

Visit to:

Tulip Fields SANDY SOIL REPORT.

Location:

JULIANADORP / DEN HELDER area.

Field conditions:

Flowering time is almost normal. Length of tulips is only a little bit shorter than normal. Now nearly all flowers are cut.  The fields in this area have good drainage. They are not damaged by heavy rain and mild winter.

Most growers report a normal field condition. They expect that the quantities to be harvested are same as in normal years.

Demand for bulbs from this area is higher.

Reasons are:

* Less fusarium problems.

* Good skin condition.

* Early delivery。

* No shortage。

Overall, growers in this area are confident that they will harvest good bulbs and supply the exporters according to the co-ntracts they already made.

Most bulbs are already sold for reasonable prices.

CONCLUSION:  Field condition is normal/good. This area will produce high quality bulbs。

Date:

30th April-2020

Visit to:

Tulip Fields CLAY SOIL REPORT.

Location:

Hoorn area。

Field conditions:

Flowering time is almost normal. Length of tulips is shorter than normal. Due to various reasons, the growth is not as str-ong as normal years. Reasons are:

* Less roots due to wet soil.

* Light green leaves due to poor roots。

* Warm temperatures during all winter。

* Quick growth during some very warm spring days.

Overall, the quality of the fields is less than in a normal season。 Growers expect that the number of bulbs they can finally harvest will be less。

Due to poor roots, they will have to water more regular。 During warm days, the tulips need water and if soil is too dry, le-aves can turn brown too early。 Growers are watering the crop daily。 Several fields show severe water damage。 This water da-mage will result in more field diseases and less bulbs this year。 More fusarium infections can be expected from bulbs grown in these fields。

Some fields that have good drainage systems are in normal condition.

CONCLUSION:  General field condition is not good。 This area will not produce enough bulbs and quality proble-ms can be expected。
